ABSTRACT

Objectives: This study examined the health gains from a programme of external wall insulation works to homes in south-west Scotland, and in particular the impact upon hospitalisations for respiratory and cardiovascular conditions. Furthermore, to consider how evidence on health outcomes could form part of the debate around actions to meet net-zero goals in the UK. Study design: This was a two-part study. Part one involved before-and-after interviews with 229 recipient households. The second part comprised an observational study of hospital admissions in 184 postcode areas. Methods: Across three years, interviews collected thermal comfort and self-reported health data(Sf-36) in the winter months prior to installation, and again in follow-up interviews the next winter. Standarised monthly data on non-elective admissions for each set of conditions were compared between the intervention postcodes and the wider health board area over a ten year period. Results: Following receipt of wall insulation, inability to achieve thermal comfort in winter reduced by two-thirds. Improvements in thermal comfort were associated with gains in physical health scores. Relative standardised admissions fell in the treatment areas, remaining lower than the district-wide standardised rate for the majority of a five year period, this effect ending during the Covid-19 pandemic. The impact on admissions was greater for respiratory conditions than for cardiovascular conditions. Conclusion: A weak policy commitment to energy efficiency could be strengthened with further evidence of the cost-savings and reduced hospital bed demand resulting from insulations works. The potential health gain may also encourage more home owners to participate.

ABSTRACT

Background: The use of digital technology is promoted as an efficient route for the delivery of intensive speech and language therapy in aphasia rehabilitation. Research has begun to explore the views of people with aphasia (PwA) in relation to Information and Communication Technology (ICT) usage in the management of aphasia but there is less consideration of the prescribers' views, i.e., speech and language therapists (SLTs). Aim(s): We aimed to explore SLTs' views of ICT use in aphasia management and identify factors that influence their decisions to accept and integrate ICT in aphasia rehabilitation. In addition, we considered the findings in the context of the Unified Theory of Acceptance and Use of Technology (Venkatesh, Morris, Davis & Davis, 2003). Methods & Procedures: Speech and language therapists (n = 15) from a range of clinical and geographical settings in the Republic of Ireland were invited to participate in one of four focus groups. Focus group discussions were facilitated by an SLT researcher and were audio-recorded and transcribed. Analysis was completed following Braun and Clarke's six phases of thematic analysis (Braun and Clarke, 2006). Outcomes & Results: Four key themes were identified;i. Infrastructure, Resources, and Support, ii. SLT beliefs, biases and influencers, iii. Function & Fit, and iv. ICT and Living Successfully with Aphasia. The SLTs discussed a wide range of factors that influence their decisions to introduce ICT in aphasia rehabilitation, which related to the person with aphasia, the SLT, the broad rehabilitation environment, and the ICT programme features. In addition, several barriers and facilitators associated with ICT-delivered aphasia rehabilitation were highlighted. Conclusion(s): This research highlights a range of issues for SLTs in relation to the use of ICT in aphasia rehabilitation within an Irish context. The potential benefits of using ICT devices in rehabilitation and in functional everyday communication were discussed. However, SLTs also identified many barriers that prevent easy implementation of this mode of rehabilitation.Copyright © 2022 The Author(s). ABSTRACT

With the various high-profile global debates and protests about the urgent need to address climate change, the environment and sustainability, as well as the outbreak and pandemic spread of COVID-19, the focus turns once more to the concept of stewardship as a form of leadership. This chapter outlines the key features of stewardship theory, the etymology of stewardship as a concept and some of its biblical and theological aspects. The chapter then turns its focus to the story of the unjust steward as found in the New Testament. Although his dishonesty is not commended, the steward’s prudence is. It is contended that this constructive lesson about the affirmation of the normative quality of prudence with resources in a time of crisis – despite the unethical context of dishonesty – offers an interesting position for the continuing reflection on leadership and business ethics. Using the categories of prudence to refer to ‘responsible’ and honesty to refer to ‘good’ – it is argued that with the present demand to address climate change, the environment and sustainability, prudent (responsible) rather than honest (good) leadership may become the prime focus for reflection on ethics in business and leadership as a form of stewardship. © 2022, Springer Nature B.V.

ABSTRACT

AI in My Life' project will engage 500 Dublin teenagers from disadvantaged backgrounds in a 15-week (20-hour) co-created, interactive workshop series encouraging them to reflect on their experiences in a world shaped by Artificial Intelligence (AI), personal data processing and digital transformation. Students will be empowered to evaluate the ethical and privacy implications of AI in their lives, to protect their digital privacy and to activate STEM careers and university awareness. It extends the ĝ€DCU TY' programme for innovative educational opportunities for Transition Year students from underrepresented communities in higher education. Privacy and cybersecurity researchers and public engagement professionals from the SFI Centres ADAPT1 and Lero2 will join experts from the Future of Privacy Forum3 and the INTEGRITY H20204 project to deliver the programme to the DCU Access5 22-school network. DCU Access has a mission of creating equality of access to third-level education for students from groups currently underrepresented in higher education. Each partner brings proven training activities in AI, ethics and privacy. A novel blending of material into a youth-driven narrative will be the subject of initial co-creation workshops and supported by pilot material delivery by undergraduate DCU Student Ambassadors. Train-The-Trainer workshops and a toolkit for teachers will enable delivery. The material will use a blended approach (in person and online) for delivery during COVID-19. It will also enable wider use of the material developed. An external study of programme effectiveness will report on participants': enhanced understanding of AI and its impact, improved data literacy skills in terms of their understanding of data privacy and security, empowerment to protect privacy, growth in confidence in participating in public discourse about STEM, increased propensity to consider STEM subjects at all levels, and greater capacity of teachers to facilitate STEM interventions. This paper introduces the project, presents more details about co-creation workshops that is a particular step in the proposed methodology and reports some preliminary results. © 2021 Owner/Author.
